The President of the European Commission could be directly elected by universal suffrage at the same time with the European Parliament elections (in a separate vote).

The EU “soft power” doesn’t seem sufficient to face today’s international issues. Indeed, one might wonder how diplomatic corps can be a convincing power without military backup. Therefore, the common defence policy should ensure that the EU has the ability to engage in peacekeeping missions when needed and under the UN mandate.
